Baby cashmere blankets
Special Gifts for Newborns
One gift that never goes out of style for new mothers are baby cashmere blankets. Typically large in size, around 44 inches by 33 inches or even bigger, these blankets serve as wrap-arounds, clothing, bedding and comforters all at once. There are few items that a new mom needs more, and handmade baby cashmere blankets is the most precious kind of all. Since they take so long to knit by hand, they reveal the true devotion and love that resides inside the gift-giver. They are used for life and can even be passed down as family heirlooms.
To make a baby blanket for a family member or close friend, get started early. They really do take a lot of time, patience and planning. If you're an expert knitter, simply locate or dig up a favorite old pattern and get started. If you're a beginning knitter, look into taking some nightly courses at your local knitting store. The ladies who run the place will be more than happy to help you out, especially once they find out what you're trying to make. Baby blankets are usually knitted on small size needles (such as a size 4 or 7), and the most beautiful ones tend to be knitted in block patterns on circular needles to accommodate the extensive size of the blanket. It may take months to complete, and that's a best-case scenario that assumes you're diligently knitting away every day! Still, it really is the thought that counts in this case, and if you stick with it, you'll make the new family member feel especially welcome and loved.
