Childbirth around the world
Every culture has its own customs and nothing could be truer than the customs of childbirth. As each culture is unique so are their customs of childbirth.
For example, in Malta if it rains on your wedding day it means that your first birthing experience will be easy. In addition, many pregnant women hold a statue of Saint Calogero during their deliveries. They also pray to a variety of other saints asking for a safe, normal delivery.
Lativa has a long history of special customs of childbirth. In ancient Lativa, the women gave birth in a special building called a pirt. They are similar to Finnish saunas and include steam baths. Three days after the birth, the woman and child return to the pirt for a ritual bath and a feast. They also pray to Mara or Mary since Mara was thought to control the human body.
In China the customs of childbirth start shortly after the couple is married. To begin with the man carries the woman over a pan of burning coals. This is supposed to ensure that she will give birth easily. While she is pregnant the woman is supposed to make sure she thinks only peaceful, calming thoughts because the ancient Chinese believed that what you think about affects your heart, and the heart, in turn, affects the unborn child. In addition, sex during pregnancy was absolutely forbidden. The pregnant women is forbidden to attend funerals as this might attract evil spirits which could harm the child. She also has to pay special attention to the foods she eats. Improperly cut food might lead to a careless child.
