Infant feeding amounts

How much should you feed your baby?

Some hospitals recommend feeding your baby every four hours, although other pediatric doctors say that two to three hours between feedings is optimal. But it is unnecessary to wake your baby up to be fed, because if you disrupt their sleep they will not be particularly hungry and might not feed well. As for infant feeding amounts, your baby will receive every single nutrient they require from breast milk or formula. Generally they will feed until they no longer wish to, and that is the proper amount. Usually it is as simple as that. Infant feeding amounts can vary between babies, but until they reach six months of age, there is really no need to spoon feed them or attempt to make them eat solid food.

The truth is milk is enough food for them at first. It contains protein, for example. After six months, you may start to introduce soft rice cereal in their bottle. They are really just trying to get at the milk, but will take to solids when they're ready. After that you may slowly introduce small vegetables and fruit, but wait to introduce meat or cow milk until approximately the first year has passed. With each different item that you introduce, it's a good idea to wait at least three days before trying something new, so that you may see what effects it has had on your baby. As always, consult your pediatrician with any questions or concerns. They will be able to tailor their answers and suggestions specifically to your infant.
