Christening - An important family get together
Christening is one of the first important rituals in a Christian baby's life. Essentially, a christening is the act of bestowing a Christian name on the baby during a baptismal. Everyone important to the baby or the baby's immediate family is present, and the tradition takes place in a house of worship. Because of the high attendance, and the fact that this may be the first time the non-immediate family gets to meet and greet the new baby, it's important to dress your newborn in a christening gown bought especially for this purpose. Newborn christening gowns can be purchased in baby clothing stores or online. Some websites offer everything you can think of (and some items you can't) such as christening socks, shoes, bonnets, jumpers, gowns and other accessories, not to mention christening gifts that you can bestow upon the family.
Since baptism is a Christian sacrament signifying spiritual cleansing and rebirth, most christening frocks are pure white and clean as can be. Also there are many different beliefs regarding baptism, such as the idea that if a baby isn't baptized they will not be able to enter heaven, whether or not they are Christian. Whatever your beliefs, check with your church leader when setting up the special day, because while most churches will baptize infants, some will only allow adults to go through with the ceremony, believing the person being baptized should be making a cognizant decision regarding the practice. There are many policies and procedures that differ from institution to institution.
