Smoking and Infants: Always a Bad Idea
Adults have many bad habits; however there are some that should be checked at the door if you have small children living at home. One of those bad habits is smoking. Smoking and infants are an unhealthy combination and one that could cause some serious health problems for your child. Smoking around expectant mother also poses health risks to both mother and child. Keep this in mind before lighting up. Smoking around your infant, or when you are pregnant, can have many negative impacts, including but not limited to the following: impaired development of the fetus, increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), increases risk of premature birth, difficult breathing or reduced oxygen to the fetus, increased risk of infant mortality, and increased risk of respiratory infections. These threats are not to be taken lightly and can have serious side effects for your child and may even end in death. Pregnant smokers should really consider quitting smoking during the pregnancy. This is the best option to ensure your child develops as it should and to reduce as many risks as possible to both your health and the fetus.
If you are married to a smoker, make sure he smoke have negative impacts, and the infant will suffer most of all. There are many options to keep from smoking around your infant. Simply relegate
smoking as an outdoor activity and only smoke outside and away from your family. Although you should quit smoking altogether for your own health, not smoking around your family is the best way to keep them safe.
